BIOGRAPHY

The architect of Montefiore Medical Center’s Musculoskeletal Oncology Service and a New York magazine “100 Best Doctors” honoree, Dr. David Shein has practiced orthopedic medicine on three continents, building a reputation as a leader in orthopedics and earning awards for both his practice and his teaching of medicine. A fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons since 1998, Dr. Shein has been a referral surgeon for many joint replacement and spinal orthopedic surgeons in the New York area for more than 25 years.

He was invited to join the faculty at Montefiore Medical Center in New York in 1994 after presenting his work on bone loss and restoration techniques, also serving as attending orthopaedic surgeon at Jacobi Medical Center and assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Shein went on to create Montefiore’s Musculoskeletal Oncology service in 1997. He served as director of musculoskeletal oncology for seven years, working with internationally renowned bone pathologist Dr. Howard Dorfman to develop a sarcoma service that managed more than 60 primary bone tumors each year.

In 10 years on the faculty at Montefiore, Dr. Shein received the annual Faculty Teaching Award four times. He is a graduate of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Dr. Shein’s deep understanding of the intricate relationships between the spine, hip and knee enhances his ability to treat common and complex conditions of the entire musculoskeletal system.
